We're Reading!!

We've been trying very hard in our house to foster a love for reading.
The older two have really picked up the pace this year.
I can't believe how quickly they've been plowing through books.
I'm sure our standard "reading time" each evening before bed has helped. . .
although there have been a few nights lately, when I thought their
lights were out and it was 10:30 ~ yikes!!
I guess it's a good problem though. . .just have to be a bit clearer about my expectations :)
The youngest two are still being read aloud too. . . although I worry that
I don't read as much to them as I did my olders.
Abby is just starting to have the confidence to read a bit on her own....

I've been reading a book called Twice Freed by Patricia St. John out loud to the olders,
and am almost done reading Little House in the Big Woods,
by Laura Ingalls Wilder, to the younger ones.

What do you and yours enjoy reading??

  2. One of my kids top favorites is Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen Taylor. It is fantstic! Jeff has read it several times to them since they were babes. ;)

  3. Caleb and I just happened upon one that was a favorite among my siblings when we were young: "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl. Since yesterday he has listened to the CD (read by Mr. Dahl himself) 3 times through already, as well as watched a movie version. He is also listening to the "Little House" series over and over and Joseph is reading him "Charlotte's Web" in the evenings and I'm reading him "Stuart Little" (both by E. B. White) at naptime. I definitely make it a point to sit down and read the actual books to him but he also LOVES to listen to audio books (like when he's eating at the table by himself).

By the way, I LOVE your blog. Your photography is AMAZING. And you've inspired me to start journaling "gratitude lists." Thank you.

  4. Our read-aloud times when the kids were younger are some of our BEST memories; it gets harder to maintain this tradition as the kids get older but they (and we) still enjoy it when we carve out the time! And when we go on road trips we always try to get recorded books to help pass the time. Some of our favorite books/recorded books: On to Oregon, Caddy Woodlawn, Shades of Gray, Carry on Mr. Bowditch, the Grandma's Attic series, The House of 60 Fathers, Rifles for Watie, Toliver's Secret, Seven Daughters and Seven Sons, The Bronze Bow, Christian Heroes books, also books by Dick King Smith and Richard Peck. We keep a "Read Aloud Registry"--can you tell? : )

  5. I long for our boys' noses to be stuck in books. They have their days. You pictures are just precious! One our favorites is Little Pilgrim's Progress, the boys just love that book!
