Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

I had to share these sweet photos.
I LOVE when my girls have friends over
that encourage creative play. . .
They made their whole bedroom into an
"American Girl House."
These days are fleeting, I know.
O, how I wish I could make time freeze.
O Lord, may I enjoy EVERY MOMENT that You
give me with these precious little girls.
May they grow to be women of God,
who fear You and love You
with their whole heart.
In Jesus name, Amen

Life in California

Shortly after 3:00 this afternoon, I had just finished "tea time" with the three little ones, when Ellie and Drew came running in to tell me there was a fire. We all ran out back and to our amazement. . . we saw this. Yikes.
It seemed to have just started spreading, because we came out right as all of the fire-engines and fire-helicopters started arriving. We live on a hill, so you can see by the picture that we had quite a view from our fence. This was a little too close to home for me, but boy the children thought it was cool!
I grew up in Georgia so the only real environmental threats I encountered as a kid were extreme heat (ha,ha), an occasional crazy thunderstorm that might knock over the pine trees around our house, and flying roaches :) My kids, on the other hand, have a few more serious threats that they have to put to rest in their little minds. We actually felt an earthquake yesterday, so that makes two days in a row of "life as we know it" in California!!
Drew prayed at the dinner table tonight, "Thank you that the firemen were able to get the big fire out on our mountain." I am amazed at how trusting my children have been today. They feel safe. They know that they are being taken care of - by their mom and dad, by the local fire-fighters and police, and by their LORD. I pray that my dear husband and I will continually have wisdom as we shepherd their little hearts through the ups and downs of life.
This evening as I made dinner Psalm 73:25,26 kept coming to my mind:
"Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
God IS our strength and our portion. May we always trust Him.

Gratitude List (#64-91)

"Grumbling about hard things blocks our expectation of good things, and if we are not looking for the good things, we may fail to see them when they come. That's part of why thankfulness is so important. Offering thanks to God, no matter what is going on in our lives, is a way of acknowledging that he knows exactly what he is doing and that we can trust him."

The Boy and the Gopher

So, I've been inspired to tell a story,
due to the fact that lately I've been reading fables
to my children and because of a happening today. . .
Once upon a time, one warm spring evening,
a sweet family was enjoying their supper outside.
Their attention was drawn to their puppy,
who (looking incredibly like a cat) was about to pounce
on an unsuspecting gopher, popping his
head up for a breath of the fresh air.
As they watched their puppy run back and forth,
between two of the tricky gopher's holes,
Father's irritation grew. Pretty soon, HE was poised
(with a golf club) ready to strike that unsuspecting gopher.
Of course, this was all to no avail. With great frustration,
Father said to his little ones, "I will give twenty dollars
to anyone who KILLS a gopher." (hmmmm. . .)
So, the next day, taking Father's challenge to heart,
the little boy set out in search of a gopher. Mother was a
bit curious that afternoon, when her son came inside
and asked out of the blue, "Mom, what do gopher's eat?"
She responded that she was unsure, and followed him
outside to investigate what had prompted the question. . .
To her disappointment, she found a HUGE
hole in the middle of the yard. When the little boy
was questioned, with tears in his eyes, he said,
"Yes, I dug the hole but ONLY to get a gopher,
and get dollars."

If you challenge a child to an impossible task,
you better be willing to forgive his
irrational behavior while trying to
complete the task. . .

Planting our Garden

Today I was inside working,
and Abby came running in to tell me
that she and Toby had a surprise for me.
I went outside, and lo and behold,
they had weeded our entire veggie plot!
How proud they were of themselves. . .
and how proud Mama was of their labor of love!
We planted pole beans, cucumbers, squash,
(I know I'm being ambitious with our small plot. . .)
cantaloupe, and yellow peppers.
Grow little plants grow!!!

Memory Work

"Why do you say, O Jacob,
and complain, O Israel,
'My way is hidden from the Lord;
my cause is disregarded by my God'?
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom."
Isaiah 40:27,28

A Mother's Day Surprise

As you know, we are visiting the pastor's family in Lynden, Washington (Num Num and Papa). It is our official homeschooling spring break, as well as a much needed vacation. BUT, it is also a VERY BIG Mother's Day gift for my dear mother-in-law from her hubby. You see, she had NO IDEA that we were going to arrive at her house last Thursday night! Papa purchased plane tickets for us, and he and the pastor have been planning for months. . . And BOY was she surprised! Papa joked with the kids that we were going to "shock the pants off of Num Num," and how that rang true. When we arrived to their house Thursday night, she was ready for bed, standing in the kitchen in her nighties :)

We've had a very special time. We went to Auntie Tricia's school on Friday in Blaine, and surprised her too. She also had no idea we were coming. The children had so much fun seeing her kindergarten class and meeting her dog Lucy. We went out to dinner that night, and then came back home to take tractor rides with the neighbor farmer while he plowed his field.
We've been taking long country walks, enjoying the cool air and BEAUTIFUL scenery. I have SUCH a romantic view of this area, because it is one of the places where my hubby and I started falling in love :) Even the smells bring back memories of those tender years of courtship.
Yesterday, the pastor preached at his dad's little church called Wiser Lake Chapel. It was a sweet time, seeing old family friends. I wore my very precious mother's day gift. . . a Lisa Leonard necklace with the names of my five little blessings engraved on charms. I am OVERWHELMED at how my husband loves me. He honors me so well, and makes me feel so special and blessed.
We got to go to Birch Bay and eat a WONDERFUL lunch. . . and walk on the beach, enjoying God's creation afterwards. It was a memorable day!! We got home, and my sweet son gave me this rock that he had written on.
How I love the children my Heavenly Father has blessed me with. Thank you, dear Father, for Ellie, Drew, Abby, Toby, and Whit.
My heart overflows with the depth of Your love for me and the life You have given me. . .

"The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance."
Psalms 16:6

"I give thanks to you, O Lord my God,
with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever."
Psalms 86:12

In Jesus name, Amen.
